Big Inspiration at the Big Mingle

Ladies of TPG represent! We took Women’s History Month to the next level this week by making history when we joined other amazing women in attending the first annual League of Professional Theater Women’s 2014 Awards Ceremony and Big Mingle! It should be mentioned that our fearless leader, Amanda Pekoe, is on the board of the organization. That basically makes The Pekoe Group an advocate of women in theatre.

Tamara Tunie was our host for the inspiring awards. (Jealous?) We witnessed some real artistic justice served as a handful of vivacious, progressive, and talented women were honored for their contribution to kicking ass in theatre. The youngest recipients kicked off the ceremony; Katherine Kovner of The Playwrights Realm and Meiyin Wang of The Public’s Under the Radar Festival were both awarded for their dedication to promoting new work. The rest of the awards went on to honor Costume Designer Judith Dolan, incomparable LPTW devotee Sondra Gorney, and Bond Street Theatre’s Artistic Director Joanna Sherman, for her work overseas bringing theatre, and thereby power, to some of the world’s most culturally oppressed women.

Audra McDonald presented The Lifetime Achievement Award to Zoe Caldwell. (We know you’re jealous now.) It was an honest and touching exchange from long-time mentee to mentor. These legendary performers reminded us of the enduring education that is a life in the theatre. Which took us all back home… and back to the bar.

The lobby of the new Pershing Square Signature Center was electric. We broke crostini and drank wine amongst this powerhouse of estro-geniuses from every component of theatre. It was amazing. And we were there. You know, because we’re awesome.
