TPG’s Winter/Spring 2017 Theatre Guide

Last week, the all-knowing groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, declaring six more weeks of winter . . . or, from our perspective, only six more weeks until spring! However you look at it, we’ve got some awesome shows (on and off Broadway) to keep you warm in the next few weeks:

February 10 – 11

What is it?

American Ballet Theatre Studio Company (formerly ABT II) + the graduate students of The Royal Ballet School of London (RBS) = Classical (and new classical) magic on stage.

Why you’ve gotta see it:

RBS and ABT both have a history of producing some incredible dancers (cough, cough, Misty Copeland). Don’t miss your chance to see their up-and-coming stars in a unique collaboration at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.

Now – February 18

What is it?

We’ll let The New York Times take this one: “It’s a bit like a sex farce with real sorrow instead of slammed doors, and something like a drawing room comedy with moral conundrums peeking out beneath the cushions. It is often very funny; it is also very nearly a tragedy.”

Why you’ve gotta see it:

Not only did The New York Times also name it a Critics’ Pick and write, “Say ‘I do’ to seeing it,” The New Yorker called it, “Splendid,” and The Huffington Post described it as, “Yet Another Sparkling Mint Theater Company Discovery.”

Circus Now

March 3 – 5

What is it?

Three totally different, jaw-dropping contemporary circus programs over three days at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts that are packed with the most innovative companies around.

Why you’ve gotta see it:

It’s back after not one, but TWO sold-out seasons to remind you that the circus has never been more amazing.

April 11 – 16

What is it?

In their NY Premiere at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, Montreal-based circus company Les 7 Doigts de la Main (The 7 Fingers) has found a way to combine our two favorite things: brilliant circus and food.

Why you gotta see it:

After you see what this deliciously creative company of acrobats and artists can do, you’ll never look at your kitchen appliances the same way.

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical

March 23 – May 6

What is it?

Percy Jackson (yes, the one from Rick Riordan’s best-selling Disney Hyperion series) discovers he’s the son of Poseidon, throwing him into an epic musical adventure full of Greek gods, monsters, and awesome rock songs.

Why you’ve gotta see it:

We think watching Broadway’s Chris McCarrell sing “Good Kid” from the show is all the convincing you’ll need: take a look!

The Artistic Director of Fellowship for Performing Arts (the fine folks that brought you C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters) brings to life the one and only C.S. Lewis in his unforgettable journey from atheism to belief.

Why you’ve gotta see it:

No one is as witty, smart, and thought-provoking as C.S. Lewis. Who wouldn’t want to spend an evening with him?
