Five Cool Websites

The internet is a vast, intricate information superhighway that is quickly becoming the most commonly used type of media in the world.  In fact, the average person spends over 3 hours on the internet everyday!  Nowadays, people are using the internet for everything.  That being said, often times the internet is underutilized and underappreciated because of the tendency for users to stick to a certain few sites they check every day instead of actually browsing the web for new information and new websites.  For example, a Nielsen study taken in 2010 showed that Facebook and Twitter alone count for over 20% of total time spent on the web, dominating the second place category of Email by almost 10%.  As an avid user of the internet, I have put together a list of my five favorite relatively unknown sites that are informative, educational, or just plain fun!

5.  StumbleUpon.com

The ultimate time waster, StumbleUpon is a user-generated, customized website search engine which takes you to the most interesting and popular websites based on what people with similar interests browse on the internet.  The website now comes with a downloadable search bar so that you can ‘stumble’ with ease!   WARNING:  You can spend hours and hours of time on StumbleUpon without seeing something twice, so productivity might falter!

4.  ACT-Responsible.org

ACT Responsible, which stands for Advertising Communities Together, is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and inspiring responsible communication on sustainability, equitable development, and social responsibility.  The website shows how advertising professionals from all around the world can use their core talent (creativity) to play a significant role in addressing crucial world issues.  Advertising can be a very effective tool for inspiring social change, and ACT Responsible showcases some of the best advertisements from around the world.

3. TheyRule.net

A website for the government conspiracy theorist in all of us, Theyrule.net is a relatively simple flash website that shows the connections between the most powerful people in the world and the many boards of directors they sit on.  After selecting a company to focus on, the website then makes a map of all of the connections that company has with other major companies. This website is a must-see for anyone interested in business and how these companies are run.

2. Foodily.com

Perfect for the mom with a child with food allergies (or anyone with a love for cooking!), Foodily is a website in which a user can type in a certain dish and the ingredients they don’t want in the dish and will then be presented with an easy recipe.  Many of these recipes are user-submitted, but there is a rating and comments section for user-generated feedback.

1.  Musicovery.com

Music has long been known as a fantastic tool for tweaking our moods.  In fact, according to a recent article published in Psyblog.com, music affects our mood in 7 different ways, from the most fundamental level of providing simple entertainment to the ability of music to bring back memories, trigger strong feelings, distract from worldly problems, and even comfort in times of hardship.  The idea behind Musicovery is very simple; you choose a point on a spectrum of moods from Dark to Positive and Energetic to Calm and it designs a playlist of all different types of songs fitting that mood.  It is a fantastic resource that not only helps entertain but also can help change your mood when you’re feeling a little off.
