Serve Your Theatre Community This Summer!

Whether you’re on break from school or looking to shake up the wake-work-sleep routine, volunteering is a great way to add a little theatre to your summer. We’ve listed a few of the opportunities the New York City community has to offer:

All Stars ProjectThis multifaceted nonprofit provides performance-based education for underprivileged and minority children and youth, and they need you! The Castillo Theatre, the All Stars Talent Show Network, the Development School for Youth, Youth Onstage!, and Operation Conversation: Cops & Kids are all socially conscious programs that are affiliated with this award-winning organization. The ASP needs volunteers to create costumes and build sets, usher, house manage, and fill all sorts of important administrative needs as a part of its day-to-day operations. Volunteers don’t need any prior experience. Call Craig Bannister at (212) 356-8436 or email to find out more. (543 West 42nd Street, No. 1.)

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS—Broadway’s fundraising organization for research in the treatment of AIDS takes on volunteers on an “as-needed” basis to assist with regular fund-raising efforts (mailings, flyers, collecting contributions), as well as ushering and other tasks. Contact Scott Stevens at (212) 840-0770, ext. 245, or email for more information. Also check out BC/EFA’s affiliate fundraising/social action organizations: Artists Striving to End Poverty (ASTEP), Broadway Green Alliance, Broadway Impact, and R.Evolución Latina, which each have their own individual service needs. (165 West 46th Street, No 1300.)

Cherry Lane Theatre Having served as a vital developmental theatre in the Village for over 80 years, the Cherry Lane will allow you to see performances in its landmark space, gratis, in exchange for volunteer ushering services. For this and other volunteer opportunities, email or call (212) 255-0270. (38 Commerce Street.)

New York City Center Opportunities to volunteer in the merchandise boutique, membership information booth, patron lounge, and to lend clerical support are available at this historic New York City cultural institution, which Encores! Great American Musicals in Concert and a number of distinguished dance and theatre companies call home. Email for more information and to arrange for a volunteer interview. (130 West 56th Street.)

Signature Theatre Company Located at The Pershing Square Signature Center, the Signature Theatre’s mission is to honor and celebrate the playwright. Help is needed in “marketing, development and artistic departments in special projects and tasks.” Email if you’re interested! (480 West 42nd Street.)
